There has recently been a very successful study carried out by medical professionals regarding the electronic cigarette’s ability to help smokers quit smoking. The study was carried out in South Africa, where close to 350 heavy smokers were given an electronic cigarette. The results were quite outstanding. Within 6 weeks nearly 50% of all of the participants had completely quit smoking and moved over to the electronic cigarette.
The doctors who conducted the study took time to analyze the electronic cigarette, to check the medical effects. They found that the e cigarette was much healthier than traditional cigarettes, and a far better smoking alternative.
Above 50% of the device users showed a noticable difference in their lifestyle, feeling more healthy, more active and generally having more energy. A lot of the respondents also gained a better physical appearance, an upshot of increased energy levels. Some of the respondents also quit smoking after just 2 weeks, long before others.
The electronic cigarette is a device that is used to emulate smoking. The device contains cartridges that contain small amounts of nicotine in a liquid form. The sternum is also referred to as the chest bone or breastbone. This is a flat bone that is situated in the central portion of the chest, just underneath the collarbone. If you refer to human anatomy, then you can easily identify the T-shaped sternum, which joins the rib bones on both sides via the cartilage.
Pain in the sternum can be either an acute (lasting for a short period of time) or chronic (lasting for a longer time period) condition. At times, it is associated with a cracking or clicking sensation in the sternum bone.

What Leads to Sternum Pain?
Although sternum pain is listed as a common symptom associated with chest pain, it is to be borne in mind that the pain experienced is entirely different from cardiac-related chest pain or angina.
Costochondritis
An injury or inflammation to the rib cartilage which connects to the sternum (costochondritis: pronounced: kos-toe-khon-dri-tis), is one of the most common reasons for experiencing breastbone pain. Even though not many of us are aware about costochondritis, thousands of people seek medical attention every year for treatment of this medical condition. In majority of the cases, it develops due to inflammation and/or swelling of the rib cartilage, resulting in sharp pain on the left side of the breastbone. The pain worsens when coughing or deep breathing. Therefore, many a time, the pain might mimic a pain which is felt in a heart attack or any other heart condition. This condition is also referred to as costosternal syndrome, costosternal chondrodynia, and chest wall pain. If the symptoms of costochondritis are accompanied by swelling, then the condition is referred to as Tietze syndrome.
Heartburn
This is an irritating burning sensation which is felt mostly at the lower sternum. The burning pain, can many a time extend to the neck and throat. Heartburn is usually caused by gastroesophageal reflux (backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus).
Sternoclavicular Joint Injury
The sternoclavicular (SC) joint is the anatomical structure that connects the sternum to the collarbone (clavicle). Accidental trauma to this joint can cause mild to serious pain in the sternum, based on the severity of the injury. To be precise, dislocation of the SC joint, either anterior or posterior, may cause severe pain in the sternum.
Pleurisy
Inflammation of the thin membrane around the lungs and inner walls of the chest consisting serum (pleura). Pneumonia, tuberculosis, and other lung-related diseases leads to pleurisy.
Collarbone Trauma
The collarbone is located at the top portion of the chest (thorax), in between the sternum and the scapula (or shoulder blade). Collarbone fractures and injuries are quite common, which may occur at birth, due to a fall, or due to an accident. Pain that results due to a collarbone injury can be combated by getting the bone fixed correctly.
Sternum Fractures
Another rare cause of pain in the breastbone is a fracture, which is mostly caused due to physical trauma. Injury to the sternum is possible only when a hard object hits the sternum directly with a good amount of force. However, if a sternal fracture occurs, it is usually a comminuted or crunched fracture, in which the sternum breaks into pieces.
Pectoral Muscle Pain
Sternum pain might also be felt due to pain in the intercostal muscles (muscles between the ribs) and the pectoral muscles (large chest muscles). The intercostal muscles contract during inhalation and sometimes strain hard while breathing, and this leads to the pain in the sternum.
Other Causes
Sternum pain is also reported as a post-surgical symptom of an open heart operation that involves separation of the sternum from the adjacent muscles. Other possible causes of pain are:
Overstraining of the muscles in the chest portion
Excessive exercising
Injured ribs
Bone cancer
Breast cancer
Osteomyelitis in the sternum (inflammation due to an infection of the bone or bone marrow)
In case the pain is associated with a mass formation in the sternal area, then there are chances of severe ailments like chondrosarcoma — a cancerous neoplasm of the cartilage cells, or lymphoma.
Diagnosis and Treatment Options
As already mentioned, pain in the sternum is not actually related to heart problems. However, it is to be noted that sternum pain is also a serious condition that should be addressed as soon as possible. Similar to any other health condition, early diagnosis and proper treatment is always advisable.
For diagnosis of pain in the breastbone, the physician will examine medical history and conduct imaging tests. Depending upon whether the pain is acute or chronic, the doctor may recommend medications such as corticosteroids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for treatment of the condition. For mild pain resulting from rigorous exercise, over-the-counter painkillers like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen are effective for getting relief. Lastly, getting adequate rest helps in quick healing of the injuries (if any), and thus, promotes faster recovery.

E-cigarettes could be the key to finally ending tobacco smoking and all its related diseases. Or are they delaying the goal of a smoke-free world? The scientific community hasn’t rolled out the red carpet just yet.
We look at both sides, and talk to someone who says her life has been totally transformed by vaping.
Pro: E-cigs are ‘very much less harmful’
“An electronic alternative is a less harmful way of consuming nicotine than smoking,” acknowledges Hazel Cheeseman, director of policy at Action on Smoking & Health.
“What many people don’t realize is that while smokers are addicted to nicotine, it is the smoke that kills them. Consuming nicotine through vapor rather than smoke is very much less harmful.”
Cutting back on regular tobacco cigarettes can only have positive health effects — currently, smoking is the No. 1 cause of preventable illness and death worldwide.
David Sweanor couldn’t be more excited for e-cigarettes to make smoking obsolete. The professor of law who focuses on global health policy at the University of Ottawa sees the potential of e-cigs to save hundreds of millions of lives globally from premature death by cancer, heart disease, emphysema and other diseases caused by smoking.
“For people who can’t or don’t want to quit using nicotine, e-cigs offer a lot of what users like about smoking: the nicotine, the hit to the throat, taste and something to do with their hands,” he says. “Yet it does this without the risk of serious disease or some of the anti-social aspects of smoking.”
Con: Vaping is priming new smokers
But not everyone is buying the e-cig promise. Studies so far indicate that only a small number of regular smokers successfully wean themselves off from cigarettes using e-cigs, points out Jonathan Winickoff, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium and a professor at Harvard Medical School.
For the rest, “using both cigarettes and vaping together might facilitate some continued tobacco use, rather than complete cessation that might have otherwise occurred,” he says. That process even has the potential to work backwards, too: “Young people who vape may become addicted to nicotine and then go on to smoke regular tobacco.”
A nationwide study last December found that more teenagers are vaping than smoking regular cigarettes; among 8th and 10th graders, e-cig use was double that of traditional smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control, from 2012 to 2013 e-cig use by high schoolers rose 61 percent.
All of this is happening while the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research still has not approved a single e-cigarette as a safe and effective method to help smokers quit, according to the American Lung Association. Winickoff points out that vaping devices are still not as healthy and breathing clean air.
“[E-cigarettes] do in fact contain harmful chemicals — like formaldehyde, which is a known cause of cancer — as well as ultrafine particles that get deep into the lungs, only to worsen breathing problems.”

Peter Jennings, who spent his career informing the public before succumbing to lung cancer on Sunday, has now prompted scores of well-wishers to vow to change their lives in his honor by giving up their smoking habits.
The death of the “World News Tonight” anchor at age 67, along with his candid admissions about his own smoking habit, has drawn renewed attention to the dangers of lung cancer, which claims more than 168,000 American lives each year.
“Do you think it would have been as hard for Peter to give up smoking if someone would have told him 36 years ago that his life was already half over?” asked Heather from Florida in an online posting on ABCNEWS.com’s message board.
“So I will soldier on today on this quest to stop smoking Thanks for giving me the wisdom to realize this now Peter.”
Another message board user wrote: “I am in the process of quitting smoking and hearing this news was a real eye-opener for me. I am now trying to get my husband to quit as well.”
Jennings’ Death Hits Home With SmokersIt’s a theme that has caught on with well-wishers since Jennings’ death. By Tuesday morning, the ABCNews.com message board was peppered with postings and e-mails from smokers promising to quit the habit as well as supporters of the anti-smoking cause.
“Mr. Jennings’ death is a reminder to me that we must continue to be vigilant and we will persevere in our effort to help the many of Americans living with lung disease and those who still smoke cigarettes,” John Kirkwood, president and CEO of the American Lung Association, wrote on Monday.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States are related to tobacco use. A stunning 87 percent of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to tobacco use, according to statistics compiled by the Cancer Society.
The numbers are striking, but for those who continue to smoke statistics may not be enough of a deterrent. For some, the death of the respected news anchor may change that.
“At 9:00 I smoked my last cigarette out of the pack I had, and of course knew I needed to run out and get more,” wrote Jodi in Kansas City. “Shortly after that is when I saw the news about Mr. Jennings. I never went out and got more cigarettes and won’t today either. If Mr. Jennings wanted to impact people and make a difference about smoking and people stopping, he did with me yesterday.”
It is impossible to gauge the overall impact Jennings’ death will have on smokers, but his willingness to share his experience and explain it to viewers may have personalized some smokers’ fears.
Smoking as a Young Man, and After 9/11Jennings began smoking at age 13. He smoked for most of his adult life but quit in the 1980s before slipping up and smoking in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.
In his reporting, Jennings was devoted to educating Americans about the dangers of tobacco use, including producing a one-hour special on the subject last fall.
Jennings publicly explained his smoking history to viewers when he announced his diagnosis on the April 5 edition of “World News Tonight.” That announcement and his subsequent death may have served as a wake-up call for viewers that tobacco use has consequences.
Dana Reeve, the widow of Christopher Reeve, announced on Tuesday that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Reeve, who is not a smoker, said she is undergoing treatment and is optimistic about her prognosis. Over the years, other well-known smokers have succumbed to lung cancer, including Walt Disney and Sammy Davis Jr.
Though admirers have publicly declared plans to quit, the Cancer Society estimates that only 5 percent to 10 percent of smokers are successful in any given attempt. Finding outside help or using prescription drugs or over-the-counter products like nicotine patches can be beneficial.
“You can double your chances of success if you use anything to help you — like a drug or a support group,” said Cancer Society spokesman David Sampson.
The odds of success may be sobering, but many mourners drew strength from Jennings’ struggle, saying they felt the best way to honor his death would be to persevere.
“I kept my date with the patch yesterday, and his memory will help keep me strong,” wrote one poster. “I have smoked for approx. 36 years and know if I fail this time I will surely die the same way he did. Thank you for the strength you are giving me Peter.”
Jill McGinnis, 35, of Columbia, Miss., had been a smoker for 15 years when she heard about Johnny Carson’s death earlier this year. She was moved to stop, and with the help of nicotine gum was able to stay away from cigarettes for several months before lapsing again. She said Jennings’ death has pushed her to try again.
“It really brings it home in the sense that you realize that there are real people that are there who are public and recognized, and if it happened to then it can certainly happen to me, too,” she says.
